The Selous Project is as remote and old style as an African safari can be.

The Selous Project operates a 300,000 acre concession in the very remote South of Selous Game Reserve on the banks of the Luwegu River. This project represents and return to the old experience of Africa when a safari was about discovery and passion for the wild. The focus is own wildlife and exploring, not the delivery of a pre-baked itinerary, which is executed along pre-set game drive circuits. When vehicles leave camp they carrying food, drink and equipment to stay out explore in comfort, should a great opportunity arise.

Accommodations - Lukula Camp -  is in the old "Hemingway" style, with large meru tents, brass fittings, a four poster king bed with duvets and pillows, hot water copper baths and showers, and flush  toilets.

The camp is fully solar powered, and equipped with open game drive vehicles, fly camps, canoes, expert trackers & guides, fishing equipment and superb management and staff.

Selous Project Activities are focused on connecting with the wildlife and the beautiful natural habitat which you will visit.  Activities include:

  • Game drives in special open safari vehicles, night game drives, fly camping, canoeing (seasonal), bush walks, bush breakfasts, bush dinners, fishing, tracking, extended portered walking safaris.

  • Great food eaten in great locations with great company is said simply, great. In
Lukula we can wine, dine and breakfast anywhere, anytime and any place.

  • Bush Walks To stand with your own two feet on ‘terra firma’ whilst he stands on his four with
nothing between you both but a steady breeze, blowing into your face or inspecting
the marks left by a male leopard on his scratching post is ‘the way’ to learn and
    experience the African bush.

  • The tracking of buffalo and elephant, on foot with experienced porters, trackers and
professional (and armed) guides is a big part of what we do, often forming the
undercurrent through the day that draws us to discover other natural wonders.

  • Sitting in a Hide -The opportunity to construct a temporary ‘grass hide’ to allow us to photograph lion feeding and other game undisturbed is seldom missed.

  • Fly camping on the banks of the river after a day’s kayaking – or a night or two camping out and away from main camp. This does not require prebooking and can be decided while you are on safari. Sleeping arrangements are on the ground, on custom made canvas valises with linen sheets, blankets and mosquito nets. A safari chef and kitchen ensure appetites are
replete with great food, and a cold drink is always to hand. Facilities are a shared hot
bucket shower, canvas wash basins, and proper sit-down ‘loo with a view’.

  • Canoeing The rivers are navigable by canoe or inflatable kayaks and it is a fantastic and relaxed way to gently travel the land; either for two hours in the afternoon to a sundowner spot, or for longer expeditions of 5 days. The longer canoe expedition is a scheduled adventure that explores a 55 Km section of the river, and traverses the entire 300,000 acres of the reserve from West to East.
