Mauritius
The island of Mauritius is prize for beautiful, white sandy beaches, naturally protected by a coral reef which almost encircles the entire island. The clear calm waters are ideal for scuba diving, snorkelling and windsurfing. Outside the reef are profilic deep sea fishing areas, particularly off Le Morne where the breeding grounds of the marlin are situated.

Mauritius is easily and inexpensively accessed from Johannesburg by air, and therefore, a few days in Mauritius are easily added to any South African holiday.

Seychelles The best known of the Indian Ocean islands,  these African tropical getaways are famous for their miles of pristine coral beaches, clear water and abundant flora and fauna.  The Seychelles are conveniently reached from Nairobi, making it an excellent addition to an East African Safari.

Of the 100 principally coral islands that form the Seychelles, Mahe is the largest, housing the international airport and the capitol city, Victoria, with its various Creole restaurants, craft shops, art galleries, colourful fruit and vegetable markets. Outside Victoria, Mahe features lush coconut palms, cinnamon plantations and towering peaks which offer views of neighbouring islands. Other desitinations include La Digues Island, Desroche Island, Cousine Island (a private bird sanctuary), Praslin Island and Silouete Island.

It is easily reached by scheduled flights to Vilanculos from Johannesburg and then by charter or boat to the islands.  Principal resorts are on Bazaruto Island and Beguerra Island including Indigo Bay Resort and Benguerra Lodge.

Quirimbas Islands - a cluster of islands off the Northern Mozambique Coast easily reached from Pemba and can be reached from Dar es Salaam as well as Mozambique and South Africa.
