Namibia is dominated by the coastal Namib desert which hosts an extraordinary range of hauntingly beautiful landscapes, as well as some of the world's most intriguing flora and fauna. These plants and animals have adapted in ingenious ways to survive the rigours of the desert. To the north and east of the sandy wilderness lie rocky deserts with moonscapes, and dry thornveld savanna. Unusual weather conditions prevail along the coast where desert air meets the cold moist air of the Antarctic Benguela current. The resultant mist and fog in the early mornings sustains a wide variety of desert life. The Skeleton Coast is the treacherous stretch of coastline to the north of Swakopmund scene of innumerable shipwrecks The Skeleton Coast National Park has three zones.  The southern half is the public area of the national park focused around Terrace Bay and its accommodation, which is used predominantly on self-drive safaris. The northern zone from Mowe Bay northwards is a totally private concession within the National Park, while the extreme north of the park is the research area.  Between Mowe Bay and the research area is about 200,000 hectares of incredible countryside, which is totally isolated and private.  This is the area in which we will be operating and where we spent all four nights at the site of our new camp called Skeleton Coast Camp.

The cold Benguela Current travels all the way up from Antarctica and brings plankton rich waters to this coastline - along with massive amounts of fish.  The real bonus though, is that this current also moderates the temperatures.  We were in the middle of the desert in the height of mid-summer and the temperatures never rose above 28 degrees C.  At night we could snuggle into our duvets and sleep soundly and comfortably. This is normal for this time of year!! For five days we were cool and comfortable, which makes this is an incredible safari destination........all year round.

Sossusvlei  is the site of the towering sand dunes rising 1000 feet above the surrounding Namib desert. Dunes at Sossusvlei
Sossusvlei  Wilderness Lodge is a luxury lodge of 10 bungalows built of rock, timber and thatch on the top of a mountain with views over the deserts to the dunes in the distance.

Rooms have ensuite facilities and there is a plunge pool as well as central living / dining area.  Game is not plentiful, but Gemsbok, Springbok and Ostrich are magnificent in this stark environment.

Etosha Pan National Park is one of Southern Africa's most famous wildlife reserves.  Set semi-desert surrounding the barren Etohsa Salt Pan, it has a surprisingly high density and variety of wildlife. Because of the scarcity of water, game-vewing around waterholes is excellent.

Wilderness Ongava Lodge contains 10 chalets built out of rock and thatch, built in the Ongava Game Reserve a private reserve adjacent to Etosha offering top end service and guiding while avoiding the crowds that sometimes visit Etosha

Damaraland and the Huab Valley is known ofr the rare Desert Elephant, Black Rhinoceros, Gemsbok, Kudu, Springbok and other species associated with the desert. Stargazing is a never to be forgotten experience in this crystal clear environment.

Wilderness Damaraland Camp consists of 8 luxury tents with ensuite facilities and a plunge pool.

Huab Lodge is a four time winner of Namibia's Best Lodge category.  Here, a private nature reserve has been  established as a refuge for the 'desert elephants'. Others to be seen are mountain zebra, klipspringer,   baboon, oryx and over 170 species of birds, of which ten are endemic.

The Lodge combines complete peace and relaxation in the bush with charming Namibian hospitality. Decorated with an African touch, eight bungalows under thatch provide very comfortable and spacious   accommodation.  Each large verandah overlooks the Huab River.  Local cuisine and an usual variety of South African wines are served in a friendly and  relaxed atmosphere. Activities include guided nature walks and drives in this magnificent and varied landscape; horse riding; a trip to well-preserved rock paintings; superb birding with an expert guide; hot and cold pools.
