Kruger National Park is Africa's most
important game reserve because of its size, diversity of wildlife
and its leadership role in establishing a scientific
approach to wildlife conservation. Established in 1898 to
protect the wildlife of the South African Lowveld, Kruger
consists of nearly 2 million hectares. Most recently a treaty
was signed to include this park in the greatly expanded
Greater Limpopo Trans-frontier Park.
Kruger is home to 147 species of mammals, 507 of
birds, 336 of trees, 49 of fish, 34 of
amphibians, and 114 of reptiles. In addition to wildlife, the park conserves
cultural relics from bushman rock paintings to
archaeological sites like Masorini and Thulamela.
Because it is a public park, however, rules to protect the
public can inhibit the intimacy of contact with the environment.
For those seeking a more private experience and with closer
contact with the environment, a number of private reserves
and concessions share unfenced boarders with Kruger.
Although there is a bewildering diversity of such camps and
lodges, we have selected a handful which we believe offer the
best experience possible in their price ranges.
